As we head into the holiday season, the spirit of "community" is more than just a buzzword at Soundstructure. It’s the lifeblood of our city. Being a musician in Kansas City is a rewarding path, but it’s not always an easy one.
Between the late nights and the hustle, it’s easy to feel like you’re on your own. Thankfully, KC is home to several powerhouse non-profits dedicated to supporting artists at every stage of their career. This month, we’re giving a massive "thank you" to the organizations you should know, support, and reach out to when you need a hand.
If there is one organization every Soundstructure resident should have on speed dial, it’s the Midwest Music Foundation.
What they do: MMF fills the health care gap for area musicians. They provide emergency medical funds through Abby’s Fund and help artists navigate health insurance and low-cost care.
Why we’re thankful: They don’t just help with bills; they provide career development and educational resources that help musicians treat their craft like a sustainable business.
How to help: Look out for their "Apocalypse Meow" fundraiser—it’s one of the best local concerts of the year and supports their medical fund.
For the music teachers in our building, Band of Angels is a constant source of inspiration.
What they do: They collect used instruments, refurbish them, and get them into the hands of children who couldn't otherwise afford to play. They also provide scholarships for summer music camps.
Why we’re thankful: They are building the next generation of KC musicians. Many of the kids they support today will be the ones leasing studios from us in ten years.
How to help: Have an old trumpet or guitar gathering dust in your studio corner? Donate it. You might just change a kid's life.
Based right here in the heart of the city, Art as Mentorship (led by Enrique Chi of the KC band Making Movies) is doing incredible work for young, under-represented artists.
What they do: Through their Rebel Song Academy, they provide world-class mentorship, mental health support, and songwriting workshops for the next generation.
Why we’re thankful: They focus on more than just "playing the notes"—they teach young artists how to find their voice and use music as a tool for social change.
Located in the historic 18th & Vine District, the Mutual Musicians Foundation is the living heart of KC jazz.
What they do: They maintain the longest-running late-night jam sessions in the world and provide workforce training and "Next Gen" labs for jazz, hip-hop, and soul.
Why we’re thankful: They keep the historic "Pendergast-era" jam session tradition alive every Friday and Saturday night after midnight. It’s where the pros go to play.
Soundstructure Studios is more than just a warehouse full of soundproof studios — it's a community of artists, engineers, teachers, and music lovers united by a shared passion for music.
